Club Gimnasia y Esgrima was established on February 13, 1919, by a group of inhabitants of Comodoro Rivadavia, most of them with Spanish ancestors. Eloy Cánovas was elected president, though the club was registered 20 years later. Initially a social club, it later hosted many sports including athletics, football, rugby union, fencing, roller hockey, martial arts, chess, roller coaster, and volleyball, and was a tennis pioneer in the city. The club organized the first 'Maratón de los Barrios' in 1942, a notable running event. Its headquarters on San Martín street, inaugurated in 1953, was sold in 1994 due to economic problems, leading to the closure of all sports departments except basketball.
